    The Engine Room Supervisor will exhibit good leadership, supervisory and safety behaviours and will specifically ensure that all aspects of Engine Room operation and maintenance are carried out safely, through careful delegation and control of responsibilities.


    The Engine Room Supervisor is specifically responsible for the operation and maintenance of Engine Room equipment and systems and also the competence of those under his immediate supervision.

    Typical Responsibilities & Standards

    1)Engine Room Equipment and Systems and Utilities Operation and Maintenance1
    Prepare Engine Room Plant and Systems for start-up, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER. 2
    Start and Monitor Engine Room Plant and Systems, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER. 3
    Prepare and Shutdown Engine Room Plant and Systems, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER. 4
    Isolate and reinstate Engine Room Plant and for Maintenance, including vessel utility systems sourced from ER. 2)Manage And Supervise Effectively

    1Establish effective relationships with colleagues and subordinates.

    2Establish scope of work clearly (briefings, toolbox talks, presentations.)

    3Plan and control use of resources effectively. (Personnel, time, materials, transport, IT).

    4Use of communication skills shows leadership (oral, teambuilding, recording, noting, handover, analysing.

    5Objective and consistent in assessment of subordinates using competence assessment system.

    6Make recommendations and improvements in working practices for greater safety, efficiency and profitability.

    7Ensure all Maintenance (Routine and breakdown) is completed and recorded accurately and clearly

    8Ensure all plant and machinery complies with Class and Inspections

    3)Contribute To Control Of Critical Situations And Respond To Emergencies

    1Developing critical situations (operational, weather, equipment failure, leaks, fires personnel etc) are identified and logged for later analysis

    2Positive action is taken to limit escalation and to maintain control using applied policies or procedures or initiative

    3External agencies as appropriate are alerted in good time.

    4)Monitor and Maintain Pollution Control Measures

    1Sample and check that controlled discharges from area of responsibility to the environment are within prescribed limits

    2Identify and halt unplanned discharges where possible, and reported immediately according to policy, procedure and regulation.

    3Equipment, waste or other materials for disposal are dealt with according to the correct procedure

    4Resources such as PPE materials tools and spares are not wasted or used inefficiently

    5)Emergency Response

    1Show competence during drills and exercises.

    2Carry Out Emergency Response Role

    Units Of Competence

    • Prepare Engine Room Systems for start-up.
    • Start and Monitor Engine Room Systems
    • Prepare and Shutdown Engine Room Systems.
    • Isolate and reinstate Engine Room Systems
    • Contribute to control of critical situations and respond to emergencies
    • Manage and Supervise Effectively
    • Monitor And Maintain Pollution Control Measures
    • Carry out emergency response role
    • Provide any additional duties as required by the OiM/Unit Spt and /or HOD to maintain safe and efficientrunning of the Unit.
    Pre-hire Qualifications and Experience
    STCW Reg.
    III/2 Chief Engineer Unlimited Certificate (Steam and Motor endorsement preferred), (DCE forPetroleum/Gas as appropriate)
    Experience as Chief Engineer on VLCC preferred and at least 2 yrs as 1st Engineer.
    Experience and knowledge of hydrocarbon processing and utility systems desirable.
    Computer literate in Management System "Office" software packages and experienced on maintenance managementsystems. Experience in Permit to Work Systems.
    Medically fit to offshore International standards such as ENG1 or equivalent.

    Good Communications Skill in English
